Have you ever noticed how the beach looks different every time you visit? That’s because of beach erosion! Wind, waves, and storms slowly wash sand away, changing the shape of the shoreline. While this is a natural process, it can cause big problems for sea turtles. These amazing reptiles return to the same beaches where they were born to lay their eggs, but if too much sand erodes, their nests can get washed away before the baby turtles have a chance to hatch. High tides and storms can also flood nests, making it harder for hatchlings to survive.
In some places, people help by adding sand back to beaches or building barriers to slow erosion. Scientists and volunteers also protect sea turtle nests by moving them to safer areas or placing protective barriers around them. By keeping our beaches clean and supporting conservation efforts, we can help sea turtles continue their incredible journey for generations to come!
