Cold Stunned Sea Turtles
As winter temperatures drop along the East Coast, sea turtles face the life-threatening danger of cold-stunning, a hypothermic reaction that leaves them immobile and vulnerable. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City, North Carolina, is currently caring for 63 cold-stunned turtles, providing them with life-saving medical care and rehabilitation. Upon arrival, each turtle undergoes a detailed evaluation, followed by weeks of recovery in controlled environments. The center’s ongoing efforts, including the construction of new Sick Bay tanks, ensure they can accommodate more turtles during peak rescue seasons.
This critical work is part of a regional effort to save cold-stunned turtles, which includes other organizations along the East Coast. Endangered species like the Kemp’s ridley rely on these initiatives for survival. The public plays an essential role in supporting these efforts through donations, volunteering, or raising awareness. By coming together, we can help these remarkable creatures recover and return to their ocean home.
The Sea Turtle Hospital is currently caring for 63 turtles suffering from “cold stunning,” a severe form of hypothermia. Many turtles are still receiving daily fluids and other medications, and their supplies are running low.
