Spring Break in the Florida Keys!
We are proud to offer our new Spring Break travel program for 2021! This is for 14-17 year olds that are interested in exploring the beautiful Florida Keys while getting hands-on marine science experience. This new adventure is an amazing addition to our travel programs, and we have been working hard to make it both fun and educational – a completely new curriculum than our summer programs.
The Florida Keys are a string of beautiful tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. They are known for the amazing diving, snorkeling, and abundance of marine life in the world’s third largest coral barrier reef ecosystem. It is also the only tropical coral reef in the contiguous states and offers crystal clear waters teeming with all sorts of tropical life!
We will spend March 29th – April 3rd, 2021 exploring the mid-Keys and doing some once in a lifetime opportunities. Campers will fly into the Miami International Airport and start their journey with a behind the scenes tour of the sea turtle hospital in true Sea Turtle Camp fashion in Marathon. Here we will learn about all the resident sea turtles, how they are being rehabilitated, and all the research they are conducting around the Keys. Participants will have the chance to feed a resident sea turtle at the end of the tour! After departing the hospital, we drive a short distance down the road to one of the Keys’ best aquariums. Here we will have a behind-the-scenes and private tour from a local marine biologist. The next day is kicked off by an exciting half day at the Reef Environmental Education Foundation in Key Largo, learning about invasive lionfish and even participating in a lionfish dissection. The remainder of the trip is spent in Key Largo at a wonderful education center, MarineLab. Here we will spend 4 days and 3 nights getting tons of hands-on experience in the marine science field and even being apart of citizen science efforts. We have a number of labs, snorkeling field trips, and discussions about the local environment planned.
We’re excited to offer this trip for Spring Break 2021! For more information visit us our Spring Break webpage.
